 On Sunday July 31, 2022, Cathie Vanstone passed away peacefully at Boundary Trails Health Centre.
She will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 59 years, Charlie and her children, Jason (Avril) Vanstone and Dana (Darrel) Angers, granddaughters, Logan, and Carly (Dylan), step grandson, Liam, great grandchildren, Charlie, Olson and Aubryn and step great grandchild, Ariana. Cathie is also survived by her sister, Margaret Cove, sisters-in-law, Gaynor Mitchell and Barbara Chapman and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Ed and Myrna Vanstone.
She was predeceased by her parents, William (Bill) and Mary Chapman, brothers, John and Bill Chapman, brother-in-law, Stan Cove, niece, Deborah Ruth and nephew, Grant Chapman.
The family would like to thank the staff at Boundary Trails Health Centre for the kindness and care Cathie has received these past few years. In lieu of flowers, donations made be made in Cathie’s memory to Boundary Trails Health Centre Foundation, designated to Cancer Care.

We are sad to announce the passing of David Arthur Thiessen of Carman, MB.
He passed away peacefully, at home, on July 31, 2022 at the age of 73.
A private family gathering has been held in his honour. 
In-lieu of flowers, donations to The Heart and Stroke Foundation.
David was born on June 10, 1949 in Winkler, MB.
He was predeceased by; his parents, George & Anne; brothers, John (Irene) & George as well as his wife Mary Lynne Thiessen.
He leaves behind his wife Linnea, son Jeff (Mindy), daughter Jodi (Chris), grandchildren Drake, Brody, Alexandra, Carson and Finnley, step-children Tara & Trevor (Ingrid), step grandchildren Addison, Brooklynn and Oscar, his sisters Anne (Ken) and Helen, his brother Jake as well his many nieces and nephews. 
David started his career as a plumber in Manitoba which eventually took him to Red Lake, Ontario in 1974.  He worked for Campbell Gold Mine until he started his own business, Thiessen Plumbing and Heating in 1994.  In 2005, David retired and moved to Carman, MB where he lived with his wife Linnea Thiessen.
During the summer months, David was an avid golfer. He could be found on the Carman Golf Course many days of the week.  David also took up curling in the Carman Senior’s League.
Throughout his life, David always had a passion for cars, especially for Gertrude (Gertie), his 1975 Corvette Convertible.  Gertie was replaced by Sally, a 2007 Mustang Convertible.  He enjoyed driving around on a hot summer day with the top down, the wind in his hair and the engine rumbling.
David carried a silent, strong confidence about him.  Those who knew him well, would often look to him for his honest, no-nonsense wisdom and common-sense advice.
One hug from David, would melt away all of your worries and sorrows filling you with so much love.  His loving embrace will be deeply missed by all who loved him.

Joan Doreen Helps (nee Allen)
1937 ~ 2022
 On the morning of Sunday July 31, 2022, Joan Helps passed away peacefully in her sleep at the age of 85.
Joan was predeceased by her husband, Elgin, sons, Richard and Randy, granddaughter, Stacey as well her brother and sister. She is survived by her daughter, Patricia (Andrew), daughter-in-law, Lorraine, daughter-in-law, Shauna (Allan), grandchildren, Derek, Monika (Jeff), Adam (Stephanie), Alyssa and great grandchildren, Sophie and Parker.
Joan thoroughly enjoyed time with her grandchildren, watching them grow up. She took pride in her flower gardens at her home. Joan will be remembered for her many years of working at the Morden Dairy Queen where she made some lifelong friendships. She enjoyed the regular coffee group with the girls.
Our family would like to thank the staff at Tabor Home for their love and patience during Joan's stay with them as she fought her battle with Dementia. A private family service will take place at a later date.

Olga (OJ) Weeks was called to her heavenly home on July 31, 2022, at the age of 96.  OJ loved her Lord and Savior and was a witness to her faith, offering prayers of guidance to her family.
OJ was born to Gustav and Martha Jahnke of Devils Lake, ND, on July 26, 1926, and was the second to the youngest of 4 children.  She and her siblings were raised on the family farm near Grand Harbor Township. The  Word of God was the foundation of the Jahnke family as they were among the first 27 establishing members of St. Peter's Lutheran Church where she was baptized and confirmed.  
 She graduated from Central High School in 1943.  After graduating, she followed her love of nature and began working at the Old Faithful Inn, Yellowstone National Park.  She found artistic inspiration there and dabbled in the arts by painting with oils, making and painting rock figurines (ducks were her favorite), and finding feathers on her walks and making them into homemade cards.  OJ eventually moved to Washington and enjoyed her retirement in Medford, Oregon, along with her dog, Taffy. 
OJ returned to Devils Lake to be closer to family and enjoyed gatherings, especially birthdays since that’s the day we started our lives with Jesus.  She cherished her friendships in Medford, made new friends, and loved desserts.  She had a quick wit and sense of humor.  OJ always ended her telephone conversation with good-bye and God Bless! 

​Eli Luke Wilcox, age 8 of Fordville, ND passed away on Saturday, July 30, 2022 at his home in Fordville.


Eli Luke Wilcox was born October 30, 2013 in Fargo, ND the son of Luke and Lacey (Groninger) Wilcox. He attended Fordville Elementary School where he had completed the 2nd grade.  Eli loved to spend time outside with his family and listening to music, especially George Strait.


He enjoyed attending his brother and sister’s ball games and the occasional trip with dad out to check cows. He was known for his infectious smile and long eyelashes and his giggle will be missed by so many.


He is survived by his parents, Luke and Lacey Wilcox, Fordville, ND; his twin brother Liam, sister Sadie; his paternal grandparents: Gordon and Dori Wilcox, Douglas, ND; maternal grandparents: Dwayne and Jolene Groninger, Douglas, ND; maternal great grandmothers, Patricia Steckler, Killdeer, ND; andn Isabel Groninger, Minot, ND; paternal great grandparents, Daniel and Gloria Lies, Douglas, ND along with several aunts, uncles and cousins.  He was preceded in death by his maternal great grandfathers, Leonard Steckler and Herbert (Gene) Groninger and paternal great grandparents, James and Irene Wilcox.


Funeral services will be Friday, August 5, 2022 at 2:00 PM at the Fordville Lutheran Church, Fordville, ND. Visitation will be Friday for one hour prior to the service at the church. Viewing and graveside services will be Saturday, August 6, 2022 at the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Douglas, ND starting at 1:00 PM, burial at 2:00 PM. A lunch will follow at the Douglas Senior Center.

Alvin Peterson passed away July 30, 2022 at the Good Samaritan Center, Park River at the age of 91.


Alvin Edward Peterson was the thirteenth child born to Joseph and Emma (Skogstad) Peterson on November 6, 1930 on his parent’s farm, Shepherd Township, Rural Lawton, ND where he lived and farmed his entire life.


He was baptized and confirmed at Vang Lutheran Church, rural Fairdale.  He attended school in Shepherd Township through the 8th grade.  After spending a year in the Korean War, where he was a battalion welder, he returned to Shepherd Township to farm with his father and his brother, Albert.  He was member of the American Legion Post 147, Park River and served on the Shepherd Township Board for many years.  Alvin was previously married and had three children:  Michael, Darlene and Denise.  Michael passed away August 23, 1969.


In April of 1970, Grace Schmidt was hired as a housekeeper and to take care of the children.  This was a good fit for the family.  Alvin and Grace were married in their new home, on November 23, 1976.  She was the light of his life and they enjoyed many happy years together.  Alvin was a hardworking man, had a sense of humor, and liked to tell jokes, drink coffee and visit.  He liked to play little jokes on his grand kids and great grand kids and enjoyed their laughter.


Alvin is survived by his daughters:  Darlene (Gary) Krom, Lawton, ND; Denise Sandford, Perham, MN.  As well as his five grandchildren, Jennifer Krom, Stacy Sandford, Kyle Krom, James Sandford and Trevor Schmidt and three great-grandchildren: Teagyn Sandford, Blake McKusick and Gracelyn Krom.  His step-sons: Ronald Schmidt, Tolna, ND; Warren “Gene” (Leslie) Schmidt, Moorhead, MN; his sister-in-law, Avis Peterson, Chico, CA and many nieces and nephews.


He was preceded in death by his son, Michael, parents, wife Grace, brothers and sisters:  Peter (Ruby) Peterson, Clarence (Evelyn) Peterson, Ernest (Joy) Peterson, Edwin (Mabel) Peterson, Albert Peterson, Joel Peterson, Elda (Andrew) Flaten, Chester Peterson, Lillian (Chester) Hove, Violet (Steve) Meline, Ethel (Albert) Schuster and his twin brother, Allan Peterson.


Funeral services will be Thursday, August 4, 2022 at 1:00 P.M. at the Tollefson Funeral Home of Grafton.  Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.  Interment will be at the Vang Cemetery, rural Fairdale, ND.  Military Rites will be provided by the Park River American Legion Post and the North Dakota National Guard Honor Guard.

Mark Sagert, 62, died Friday July 29, 2022, with his family by his side in Grand Forks, ND at Altru Hospital.
   He was born July 19, 1960, in Cavalier, ND to Reinhold and Joyce Sagert (Thompson).
   Mark spent most of his life doing what he loved most, working and farming. Some of his hobbies including fixing anything broken, cattle, and collecting old cars. His greatest blessings were his sons, Austin and Drew. He enjoyed devoting his time to work and his family.
   Mark also enjoyed attending the sprint car races in Grand Forks along with his diet Sunkist obsession. He loved cheering on the Cavalier Tornadoes at most sporting events even after his boys graduated. Mark was always there to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. He will be greatly missed by the surrounding communities.
   Mark is survived by his brother Keith (Marilyn) Sagert, sons Drew (Jadeyn) Sagert, Austin (Allie) Sagert, and Aunt Marian Raymer. He is proceeded in death by his parents Reinhold and Joyce Sagert, grandparents, and great grandparents.
   Memorial service will be held Thursday, August 4, 2022, at 10:00 a.m. at the United Lutheran Church, Cavalier, ND. Visitation will be held Wednesday, August 3, 2022, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service at the church.
