Abraham (Texas Abe) Friesen
1965 ~ 2021
Dad was born on April 13,1965 to Jacob and Maria Friesen. He was raised on a small family farm in Mexico together with his siblings, 4 brothers and 3 sisters. Dad attended school in Mexico until the age of 12 and helped out with the farm. In 1979 his parents moved the family to Ontario Canada where the family worked all together picking tomatoes and cucumbers. At the age of 19 dad moved to Texas. Although he didn’t stay there very long, this is where he gained his famous nick name “Texas Abe”. In 1985, dad moved to Manitoba, Canada where he met my mom Helen Zacharias. In June of 1987 they were both baptized upon the confession of their faith and married on august 1st, 1987 in the Winkler Sommerfeld church. Together they had 3 children:
on October 20,1992 they were blessed with their first Daughter Crystal Cassandra who made him very proud and overjoyed with excitement.
on August 16,1995 they were blessed yet again with another daughter Amanda Ashley who captivated dads heart with her smile.
on Fathers day June 20,2004 dad got the son he always wanted, the one that would carry on his name. Joshua James Friesen. (JJ)
Together they lived in Winkler where they managed the Westwind apartments for 11 years. Dad was also a truck driver for different companies during this time.
Our dad pursued his dream of having a catering food truck business called "Texas Abe's Shish-ka-bobs". He absolutely loved serving the public because it would give him a chance to make more friends. This is also where us kids got our work ethics from.
In 2007-2009 he started up J.A.C.s lunchbox, together with our mom in Mexico. It was obvious that dad had a love for people and catering to them, as well as a love for making delicious food. (JJ’s favorite scrambled eggs)
Dad moved his family to Calgary AB in 2009 where he started working as a limo driver. He took great pride in providing exceptional service and no one could have a cleaner limo than Abraham.
Our dad took great pride in being an usher at the Sommerfeld church. (dressed to the nines) He would often feed the homeless in Winnipeg, visit patients in the hospital and Salem home. He was very helpful at Southland church in Steinbach where he had attended for the past 5 years
In 2012 he became a Grandpa for the first time. He was a loving grandpa to Josiah, Jeremiah, Nevaeh & Ximena. They loved going for bike rides with him, going for ice cream, playing soccer and treating the kids to their favorite meals which was usually Chinese food. A family favorite.
Dad had health complications with his heart in 1995. He was treated for clogged arteries in London Ontario. His greatest challenge was when his health started deteriorating in November of 2020. He was in and out of hospitals for the past 6 months, where he was treated for liver cirrhosis, poor kidney functions and heart complications which ultimately led to his passing.
Texas Abe was known for his infectious smile a bubbly & contagious personality, and his warm fuzzy heart. He loved to laugh, love to joke and be around his friends and family. Nobody was ever a stranger to him, he made time for anyone that needed a listening ear or words of encouragement. We can honestly say our Dad’s greatest treasure was his kids, and he loved our mom dearly. Above all, dad loved God! He would wake up early every morning to read his Bible and devotions and spend time in prayer alone with God.

On behalf of the Friesen family we want to thank the Dr.s and staff at boundary trails hospital and health science center for the great care they provided. Treating my dad with dignity and compassion and around the clock care. We would also like to thank all of our family and friends for their support and prayers, our dear friend and pastor, Tony Froese who has been a tremendous light in all of our lives. As well as Wiebes Funeral home for their empathy and care.
Our dad impacted many people and has definitely left his mark in the world. He is so loved by so many and will be greatly missed. Although it is our loss, it is Heavens gain!
