Phyllis Jean Stevens (nee Young) 1929 – 2021 Our world is a little dimmer with the passing of Jean Stevens on Saturday November 20th, 2021. Mom touched so many lives throughout her lifetime of 92 ½ years. She was predeceased by her parents and siblings as well as her daughter, Bonnie-Kae Marie, her husband of many years, Allen Stevens, daughter-in-law, Lil Stevens and son-in-law, Les Wiklund. Her greatest pride was her family who she loved unconditionally. She guided us through life with a mostly gentle hand, sound advice or just an ear to listen to our woes and a shoulder to lean on. Mom always said if she knew how much fun it was to be a grandparent, she would’ve done that first. As the family grew and expanded, she would be so excited that there was a new little person to love, enjoy and watch grow. She was pretty proud to tell people she had achieved the title of Great Great Grannie. Jean is survived by Greg Stevens and Phyllis Boulton, Gloria Wiklund and Henri Picton, Bob Stevens, Barry Stevens, grandchildren: Dan and Melody Wiklund, Richard Stevens, Lora and Trevor Murdy, Bill and Nicole Wiklund, Candace and Cameron Mutimer, Jeff and Kyla Stevens, great grandchildren: Randie Murdy and Braydon Cuthbert, Abby and Christian Chevalier, Lyndyn Murdy and Avery Magwood, Elizabeth Stevens, Hudson Wiklund, David Mutimer, Jordan Mutimer, great great granddaughter, Leah Jean Murdy along with many nieces, nephews and extended family and friends. Born May 14th, 1929, the youngest of five siblings she was raised in Sperling, MB. After she married and moved to Darlingford in 1952, she raised five children there. Mom was very active in community and church. There are many people who can say Mom was their piano teacher, vocal coach or their leader in Explorers or CGIT. Mom’s faith was strong throughout her life. It supported her through tough times. Mom loved gardening and nature. Her yard was always full of flowers and later in her years took great enjoyment in sitting in her backyard, admiring the flowers and enjoyed watching the birds that visited her many feeders. Life didn’t always treat Mom with kindness. After a whole lifetime playing piano and organ and becoming a prolific writer, with many articles published in local papers, this came to a halt when she became legally blind. Mom’s strength of character and positive attitude allowed her to carry on doing the things she was capable of without letting us know how frustrating her life had become. She always found joy in her day no matter how small. With help from her family and her Homecare girls Mom was able to stay in her beloved little house until November 2019. She spent the last couple of years contentedly settled at Pembina Manitou Health Centre. She enjoyed the interaction with staff and fellow residents always showing her appreciation for everything done for her. The caring and respect given to Mom will always be remembered by her family. Most recently, David worked at the Spirit Lake Casino and Resort. David was frequently found playing basketball or fishing with friends and family. He was always up for any adventure, willing to go along for the ride anywhere someone wanted to go, he would go along. When he wasn’t playing basketball, he was watching NBA or UFC on TV. The most important part David’s life was spending time with his family. He loved his family with all his heart, they were his treasure. Peacefully on November 19, 2021, the Lord called Jan (John) Vandersluis at the age of 85, to his heavenly home. Beloved husband of Rietje Vandersluis, loving father of Joan, Bob (Lorraine), Debbie, Barb (Kent), Bev (Jake) and Gail (Ron). Loving grandfather of Wade, Courtney, Tyson, Josh, Taylor, Samantha, Connor, and Ronin. Dad was born in Zwollerkerspel, the Netherlands, on December 10, 1935. He was the 2nd oldest of 5. Dad always wanted to be a farmer and went to agriculture school in Holland for a number of years. When his family first talked about immigrating to Canada, Dad told Opa to “just give me a few cows and I’ll stay in Holland”. In 1953 he did immigrate with his family to Canada. As a young man, Dad worked at various jobs including cutting pulpwood in Pine Falls, working the CPP rail line in Elie, hoeing sugar beets, and working on the family farm. Soon after, Mom came into Dad’s life and they married on May 27, 1960. They built a small house across the river from his parents and began farming full time. Together they raised 7 children. In the late 1970’s they purchased more land and moved into a larger house across the road. This has been their home ever since. Dad enjoyed growing a variety of crops including sugar beets, peas, oats, barley, flax, and for a time, raised hogs. Dad loved everything about the outdoors. He had a wide assortment of hobby animals and many people will lovingly remember visiting “Uncle John” and feeding his deer, goats, emus, peacocks and other kinds of birds. Often, to Mom’s dismay and our delight, he would bring baby animals into the house. He was still putting out feed for the prairie chickens the day before he passed away. Dad also enjoyed bonfires, snowmobiling, chopping firewood, Sunday drives and watching hockey. Due to health issues, Dad had to retire early from farming. He continued to keep busy with his hobby farm and helping Mom in their large garden became a new passion. They grew all kinds of fruit and vegetables and shared willingly with all who visited. Special highlights for the grandkids were strawberry and pumpkin picking with Grandpa and Grandma. Dad cherished his family and friends. He was always willing to lend an ear, offer a word of advice, and of course, share some tea and koek with anyone who stopped by. Through it all, Dad had a strong faith and trusted in God to meet his and his family’s needs. Dad was predeceased by his daughter Shirley, sisters Femmie and Susie, and his brother Bill. He will be also missed by his brother Gerry (Alice); 4 brothers-in-law: Henry, Bill (Marina), Wim (Shirley), John (Myrna); his sister-in-law Tineke (Bill) and many other family and friends. Public viewing will take place on Tuesday, November 23, 7:00–8:00 pm at Doyle’s Funeral Home in Carman. A private funeral service will be held at 10:30 am on Wednesday, November 24 in the Canadian Reformed Church of Carman East (112 - 4th Ave. SE) with Rev. Van Dam officiating.
