It is with peace and sadness that the family of Arlene Bartley announces her passing on Wednesday, February 17 at Boundary Trails Health Centre. She will be greatly missed by daughter Pat Whiteside (Doug), son Ron (Cheryl), son Doug (Sylvie) and daughter Marilyn Gitzel (Allan). Also cherishing her memory are her nine grandchildren Chad (Shawna) Whiteside, Melissa (Alan) Ballantyne and Joel (Raelle) Whiteside, Britni (Steve) Godkin, Andrew Bartley (Nikki), Taylor Bartley (Matt) and Duane (Candace) Gitzel, Ryan (Kate) Gitzel and Raelyn (John) Fox and 21 great grandchildren. Arlene is survived by her sisters Connie Thompson and Sharon Minkus and brother Wayne (Jean) Motheral, sister-in-law Agnes Phillips, brother in laws Bruce (Elsie) and Lorne (Ella) Bartley and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband John Bartley of 50 years, her parents Ralph and Marguerite Motheral, grandson Ronald Drew Bartley, sister-in-law Melva Bartley, Bud and Margaret Graham, brother-in-laws Wesley Phillips, Robert Thompson, and Ron Minkus.
Arlene was born on June 25, 1935 and grew up on a farm at Snowflake, MB. After school she obtained her Teaching certification at Normal School in Winnipeg. She moved to Roland to begin her teaching career and met the love of her life, John. They were married in 1955 and moved to the Bartley farm where they lived until 2000 when they moved into Roland. In 2015, as her health declined she decided to leave her home in Roland and move to Boyne Towers in Carman before spending her last few years as a resident of Tabor Home in Morden.
Arlene was very active throughout her years in Roland. She taught at Roland Elementary School for many years, first prior to her marriage and then returning around 1968 leaving a lasting impression on her students. She had a love for her community illustrated through her involvement in Roland United Church, the United Church Women and the choir. She was also a CGIT and 4-H leader, as well as a member of the Roland Curling and Golf Clubs. After retiring from teaching, Arlene managed the Roland Golf Clubhouse for 14 years where she was able to share her love of cooking and her good-natured sociability. She was very proud of her achievements in the kitchen and the many awards she won such as being named the Roland Pumpkin Queen. Arlene was a competitive team player whether she was on the baseball field, curling ice, or golf course, and imparted to all her kids that you entered the game to play hard and win! This might also explain her determination to tackle and complete the daily crossword. Mom was very supportive and encouraged both sons and daughters in their many activities and this carried forward to her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her love of music carried her right through her entire life as did the love of her family, both were very important to her. Arlene left an impression whether it was through her stories, her sense of humor, and her love of life. We will miss you Mom!

A private family Interment will take place on Saturday, February 20th at Fairview Cemetery, Roland. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Donations in memory of Arlene may be made to Roland United Church.
