Arvid Wendell Knutson, age 83, of Park River, ND, passed away on July 27, 2021 at the First Care hospital. He was born December 16, 1937 at Langdon, ND, the son of Arne and Mary (Coles) Knutson. He attended East Alma #3, a rural school and graduated from Mountain High School in 1956. Arvid served in the US Navy and received an honorable discharge for medical reasons. He was united in marriage to Darlene Bjornson on June 9, 1959. In 1961 he went to Aakers Business College, graduating in 1963 and went to work at the Angus Co-op Elevator in Minnesota. He then went to work for Grand Forks Linoleum and Carpet until 1970 when he went to work for Polar Communications, a job he enjoyed for 29 years, retiring as Assistant General Manager in 1999.
Arvid was a council member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church for many years, a member of the First Care Health Center Board of Directors for 15 years, City Council for 20 years and an assistant and teacher of Hunter Education for 30 years.
Arvid counted his family his greatest blessing in life. He was a kind-hearted, quiet, private man. He always looked to help people in ways we are still learning about. He was invested in the well-being of both his church and community, wanting to see Park River thrive. He enjoyed the people he worked with at Polar and advocated for equal pay for men and women there. He had a dry sense of humor and was known by his family as ‘the energizer bunny’ in the way he kept going regardless of obstacles. He enjoyed driving around the hills of Milton and Mountain, thinking back on the old days of trapping and hunting as a young boy. He was an avid hunter all his life, enjoyed having coffee with friends, and appreciated the simple pleasures in life.
Walk free, Dad, on those far side banks of Jordan.
Arvid is survived by his wife Darlene of 62 years; daughters Brenda (Bill) Kirsch, Lori (Kurt) Capouch, and son James; grandchildren Jamie, Amanda (Brent Peterson), Ryan (Sarah), Eric, and Travis (Alona), and great grandchildren Kiera, Jet, Dominic, Sylar, Brayden, Avery, Baaye and Nellie; his sister Deborah Hunter, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Earleen and Marabeth. Visitation for the public will be on Friday, July 30, 5-7pm with a prayer service at 7:00 PM at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Park River, and a private family service will be held on Saturday. Internment is at Memorial Park Cemetery. Military rites will provided by the Paul Farup American Legion and the United States Navy Honors. The family is requesting that those attending on Friday please wear a face mask.
