Audrey was born on April 20, 1932, the eldest child of Stanley and Lillian Smith of Dugald, MB. She grew up on the family farm and enjoyed rural life, and camaraderie with her younger brothers, Howard and Clifford. After attending United College and Success Business College, she worked in an insurance office in Winnipeg. Audrey and Harry married in 1955, beginning her life in Fannystelle. Early days in Fannystelle saw Audrey curling and enjoying get-togethers including card parties with the local ladies. Audrey did a lot of sewing and was a fantastic baker and cook, often receiving requests for her pies, tarts, buns, popcorn balls and other goodies. She loved gardening, visiting gardening centers and attending musicals and Pops concerts. Sunday drives and weekends to Fargo were favorites as well as getaways with Harry (or sometimes her daughters) to Alaska, Florida, California, Colorado, Hawaii, New York and on a few cruises. The colourful flowers in warmer climates lifted her soul. She was a lifelong member of the United Church. Audrey was often on ‘phone duty’ at the family lumber yard, or ‘working on the books’, but she particularly enjoyed being outside and had endless energy.
In 2011, her health required a move to Harmony Court, Riverwood Square in Winnipeg and then on to Calvary Place PCH in 2013. A huge ‘Thank you’ to both facilities for the excellent care provided and for treating us all as family. Mum had Alzheimer’s Disease for a number of years. Her memory may have failed, but we will always remember her with love. Should you wish, donations in Audrey’s memory can be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Manitoba at https://alzheimer.mb.ca/ or 10-120 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB, R3C 4G2. A private service will be held at a later date.
