Bernard (Ben) Harry Hemminger
1924 - 2022
On Saturday December 24, 2022 at Tabor Home in Morden, MB Ben Hemminger, 98 formerly of Darlingford passed away.
Bernard Hemminger was born on March 31, 1924 to parents Henry and Minnie Hemminger who farmed south of Thornhill, MB. He was the 3rd of six children. As young men, Ben and his brother, Clifford started farming together in the Windygates area and shared the same farmyard. Ben married his first wife, Phyllis (Swanky) of Dominion City in 1953 and they had two sons, Terry and Larry. Phyllis passed away in 1968 when the boys were still quite young. Ben continued to farm and raise his sons on his own. Ben loved the land and farming. He worked long hours and took great care in everything he did. Every tool was picked up and put away. His fields, yard, garden and home were always neat and well cared for. Ben married Doreen Fijala in 1983 and they moved to Morden. Ben continued to drive out to the farm to help out and he spent long hours on the tractor doing fieldwork, a task he especially enjoyed. Ben was blessed with good health which allowed him to drive tractors well into his senior years. Ben enjoyed the outdoors – hunting, fishing, snowmobiling and golfing were favorite past times. A special fishing trip with his two sons took place in 2011 to catch sturgeon on the Fraser River. Ben was 87 years old then and the fishing guide said Ben was the oldest fisherman he had ever had on his boat. Ben and Doreen enjoyed many activities together – travelling, camping, playing cards, dancing and being involved in their families’ activities and life events.
Ben is remembered by his wife, Doreen, and his son, Terry (Glenda) Hemminger and their daughters, Rachel (Sean) Miller, and Kristen (Jamie) Hemminger; his son, Larry (Sheila) Hemminger and their son, Brian (Shannon) Hemminger, and daughters, Callie (Jared) Fofonoff, and Jennie (Chris) Moffatt and five great-grandchildren, stepson, Ron Fijala and his son, Tony (Suzie) Fijala, stepdaughter, Sharon (Bob) Tremeer and their son, Mark (Alison) Fijala, and daughter, Melanie (Jarret) Tremeer, stepson, Doug (Debbie) Fijala and their son, Danny (Amber) Fijala, and daughter, Tiffany (Eric) Ching and nine great-grandchildren. Ben was predeceased by his first wife, Phyllis, an infant daughter who died at birth, his stepson, Dennis Fijala and all of his siblings, Celia (Titchkosky), Clifford, Herb, Leonard and Arthur Hemminger.
