He is survived by his children, Karen Rietze, Gladys (Rod) Wall, Sheila Wieler and Cam (Sheila) Wiebe, twelve grandchildren, Marcy (Derek) Penner, Jodie Rietze, Ryan (Jenn) Wall, Evan (Anna) Wall, Terril (Kevin) Lamotte, Benj (Kim) Wall, Russ (Ashley) McLeod, Conner (Cassandra) McLeod, Adam (Megan) Wiebe, Abby (Justin) Krahn, Emma (Lawson) McDonald, Owen Wiebe, and 18 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife Lena, son, Roger, sons in law, Abe Wieler and Randy Rietze.
Dad was born on May 13, 1928, to Jacob and Maria Wiebe. He was the seventh of eight children, dad had two sisters and five brothers. He was the last surviving member of his family. Dad grew up on a farm in Wakapa, MB and at a very young age he moved to Morris to work at the egg grading station to earn money to support the family farm. Dad accepted Jesus as his personal Saviour and was baptized upon the confession of his faith in 1946 by David Schulz. Dad and mom met through their siblings Mary and Abe who were already dating. Dad was to be introduced to someone named Bill, who he later found out was a young woman named Lena, they fell madly in love and the rest is history. Dad married mom, the love of his life on August 1, 1948.
In the early years of their marriage, dad worked at the egg grading station in Winkler. While we don’t understand egg grading, he earned first place ribbons from the Regina Agricultural Convention. Dad would say he was actually a professional Egg Grader, and we don’t think he was joking. Mom and dad moved to a farm near Winkler where together with their children, they grew and sold market garden vegetables. All while dad was employed full time, at the Winkler Creamery, and later working at the Coop lumber yard. Dad expanded the farm adding chickens and pigs, meanwhile changing professions and working at Salem as an orderly. Dad also worked at Triple E, Grandeur and Monarch. In 1979, mom and dad moved to Winkler and in that same year dad started Winkler Casket, which eventually turned into a family business. Along with employing most of his children and grandchildren at various times in their lives, dad had many long-time employees who felt like family.
Dad and Mom loved to travel to many ball games in Minnesota and Florida, spent summers in Detroit Lakes and took trips with their grandchildren. They also enjoyed attending their grandchildren’s sporting events.
Hobbies for Dad were working on his yard as well as connecting with his neighbours. Dad especially enjoyed being able to offer a helping hand to his family, neighbours or anyone else. Dad took early retirement from Winkler Casket at 88 years old. Mom and Dad spent their last years at Buhler Active Living Centre.
Dad lost his mobility this last May and spent the last months of his life in personal care. Special thanks to Silver Lining Care, the Palliative Care team at Boundary Trails Health Centre, Wiebe Funeral Home, Pastor Dean, Pastor Victor and the staff at Winkler Bergthaler Church and the many others who have offered their prayers of support and condolences during this time of loss.
