Dorothy Anne Somerville (nee Luedtke)

Dorothy died peacefully in the early morning hours of July 5th, 2021 with family by her side. She was predeceased in 2001 by her loving husband John. She was also predeceased by her parents Michael and Mary, and sister Clara. Known affectionately by her family as “Nanny”, she is survived by her three children Shena, Rona (Frank), and Iain; grandchildren Amber, Emily, Calvin, Skye, Rhiannon, Una and Mona, and seven great-grandchildren.
Daughter to Michael and Mary Luedtke, Dorothy was born in Regina, Saskatchewan on November 14th, 1937 and spent her formative years in Melville, Saskatchewan.
In 1957, Dorothy married John Somerville. They spent the early years of their marriage in Canada and began a family, first with the birth of their daughter Shena followed by the birth of their daughter Rona.  Shortly afterwards, the family moved to John’s home country of Scotland, where the family became complete with the birth of their son Iain.  The family resided in Kilbarchan, Scotland for several years before returning to Canada permanently, settling in Winnipeg in the early 1980s.
Dorothy was a stay-at-home mother while raising her children.  She later worked assisting people with developmental disabilities, first at St. Amant Centre in Winnipeg for several years and later at Rainbow Residence in Carman. She also worked for a few years in the recreation department at the Boyne Lodge. She valued her time at all of these locations and had many fond memories of both clients and staff.
Dorothy cherished the company of her family and friends. She also liked volunteering in the community, particularly at the local MCC Shop. She was a voracious reader and could pass entire days immersed in a good book. As a member of the congregation of Grace-St. John’s Anglican/Lutheran Church, Dorothy enjoyed Sunday Worship and engaging in spirited theological discussions.
In her final years, Dorothy resided at Carman’s Riverview Apartments where she felt fortunate to find new friends and a daily tea ritual that provided her with great company and conversation.
Her family would like to thank all her doctors, nurses and support staff at Boundary Trails Hospital for their endlessly supportive, compassionate and professional care.
