Peacefully, after a three - year battle with lung cancer, Eugene passed away at the age of 74 in his home surrounded by his family on December 17, 2021.
Eugene was born on March 23, 1947 in Canora Saskatchewan to Dan and Mary Prokopchuk. He was raised in Arran SK and remained living on the family farm until moving to Winnipeg in 1968 and then retiring to Miami Manitoba in 2003.
He was predeceased by his parents, brother Ross Prokopchuk and brother in laws Gord, Louie (Lillian), John, and Oscar (Marie). Left to cherish Eugene’s memory are his beloved wife of 43 years Donalda, daughters Jennifer and April (Walter), granddaughters Charlize, Chantelle (Russ), Amanda, Chelsea (Graham), sister in law Florence, nieces Sandra (Brian) and Gale, great nieces Kelly and Cassie and great nephew Neil. He also leaves to mourn numerous other nieces and nephews.
Eugene was a very humble, kind, and quiet man. He was thoughtful, giving and always willing to help anyone he could. He was friends to many and would never judge anyone. He was a man of few words so when he spoke, you knew it was important. He was a loving family man always there to help his children. He loved cooking for his family and providing grandpa’s daycare to Charlize.
Eugene worked for the City of Winnipeg as a Transit bus driver from 1972-2000. He enjoyed his work and meeting people through it. There was no place like home for Eugene. He loved being at home and would only leave for work, family or fishing. If Eugene was out in a public place otherwise, it would be because he had too much to drink. He enjoyed drinks with friends at the Brookland’s hotel in his younger years and remained life- long friends with many including Victor (Margaret) and Jerry (Betty). He also enjoyed drinks with friends at the Chatterbox and Wally’s Repair in Miami and was predeceased by his close friend Reg and leaving many more friends to mourn his loss.
Eugene had an important relationship with his daughters’ childhood friends, many of whom loved and thought of him as their own dad. He shared many special memories with all of them.
Eugene’s favorite past times include fishing trips to Grand Rapids, family vacations, watching curling and football, walking at Little Mountain Park, bird watching at Oak Hammock Marsh and visiting family. He looked forward to special visits with his cousin John (Stella) at their home in Saskatchewan, favorite fishing spots, or Arizona. Eugene also really enjoyed going for rides with Reg and Wally looking for deer and visiting with Brad and Dani on fishing and hunting occasions. He enjoyed listening to country and fiddle music and was interested in anything to do with old cars, planes, trains, and farming. Eugene was very intelligent and enjoyed winning against his family while watching and playing Jeopardy nightly.
The family would like to thank the nurses at BTHC Cancercare for the wonderful care they provided, with special thank you to Sheri-Lynn Duncan for all the extra support. Dad would always smile when he saw Sheri-Lynn and he so appreciated her. The family will be forever grateful to Palliative Care Nurse Deanne Monteith for the amazing support she provided and for always being available. Dad also had a special bond with Cancercare Manitoba Clinical Trial Nurse Rose Woloshyn. The family would like Rose to know that her caring nature and humour did not go unnoticed.
Cremation has taken place and a private celebration of Eugene’s life will be held at a later date.
Donations in Eugene’s memory can be made to Lung Cancer Canada to further life- saving research.
