Funeral Services for Eugene will be held on Wednesday, March 30, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church with Reverend Paul Schuster celebrating the Mass. There will be a gathering of family and friends beginning at 9:00 a.m. until time of service. Burial will be in St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery with Military Honors accorded by the Spirit Lake Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #6547.
Eugene Hedine was born on February 9, 1941 in Fort Totten, North Dakota, the son of Rose (Belgarde) and Herman Hedine. He grew up and was educated on the Spirit Lake Nation. He was raised by his aunt Elizabeth Robertson. He served his country as a member of the United States Army during the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged from active duty on November 14, 1963 and served with the Reserves until November 15, 1967. As a young man, he moved to Spokane, Washington where he lived and worked for many years. He returned to the Lake Region area and for the past several years has lived at the Odd Fellows Home in Devils Lake.
Eugene loved to tell stories, visit with family and friends and enjoyed making blanket quilts and sharing them with his friends and family. He was always a free spirit and enjoyed travelling around the country.
Eugene was at one time married to Gloria and they were the parents of children John and Henrietta.
Eugene’s survivors include his children John Hedine and Henrietta Hedine; loving nieces and nephews Melody Christianson, Loreen Anderson, Lorena Skaro, Lorie Steffan, Rose Wilhelmi, Rory Mercer Jr., Edith Steinhaus, Mark Mercer, Julie Sailor, Steven Mercer, Clayton Blueshield, Theresa Preciado, John Pacheco, Michael Pacheco Sr., Victor Pacheco, Robin Vasquez, Robert Vasquez, Janie Vasquez, Andrew Lopez, and Adela Vasquez; many great nieces and great nephews and dear cousins including Sonta Dauphinais, Bella Belgarde, Kenneth Graywater and Greg Feather.
He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings Delores Anderson, Irene Mercer, Verol Greywater, Mary Adams, and Ida Belgarde.
Casket Bearers will be Rodney Aguilar, Seven Mercer, Colton Anderson, Mike Pacheco Sr., James Pacheco, Scott Chase, Daniel Pacheco, Antony Vasquez and Mario Preciado.
