Gerald M. Burt, 95 of Cavalier, ND passed away Friday, December 1, 2023, at Valley Senior Living, Grand Forks, ND. Funeral service will be held Friday, December 8, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. at the United Lutheran Church, Cavalier, ND. Visitation will be held for one hour before the time of the service at the church. Burial will be held in the Cavalier Cemetery.
Gerald Milton Burt was born on February 18, 1928, along with his twin sister Grace to Claude and Lyla (Hyde) Burt in St. Joseph Township, Leroy, ND. He grew up and attended rural school and graduated from Walhalla, ND in 1946.
July 16, 1950, he married Fern Nelson at the Walhalla Lutheran Church, to this union they had four children, Dean, Bruce, Diane, and Connie.
November 6, 1950, he was inducted into the US Army, and served in Germany with the 28th Infantry Division as a Military Policeman. He was honorably discharged on November 15, 1952. In November 1954 he moved with his family to Cavalier where he owned and operated a Gamble Store for 21 years. In December 1976 he became an insurance representative for Farmers Union Insurance, retiring in April 1990. He then worked part-time on the farm for Jeff and Randy Anderson which he enjoyed very much for 20 plus years.
Gerald was a member of the United Lutheran Church, Cavalier.
Gerald was a life member of The American Legion where he was Past Commander and long-time Finance Officer and a life member of the VFW. Gerald was a Past Master of Tongue River Lodge #22, and a long-time member of the Kem Temple Shrine in Grand Forks. He served on the board of directors as secretary and treasurer of the Northern Valley Homes since 1970.
Gerald enjoyed his many fishing trips with his son Bruce and all his long-time fishing buddies to the Northwest Angle at Lake of the Woods. He was a member of the Cavalier Country Club, where he enjoyed golfing and stag nights.
Survivors include children Bruce Burt (Paula), Fargo, ND, Diane (Terry) Yokom, Detroit Lakes, MN, Connie (Steve) Akers, Barnesville, MN; grandchildren, Trevis (Kelly) Burt, Bryce (Uyen) Yokom, McKensie Yokom (Kenny), Alyssa (Trent) Oftedahl, Maci (Tyler) Hall, Jon Chandler (Heather), Jill (Ken) Satkunam, Kari (Brandon) Haggerty, Dustin (Jenna) Akers, Stacia Zimprich; Gerald was fortunate to have 25 great-grandchildren. He was also survived by his twin sister, Grace Reck.
Preceding him in death are his parents; wife, Fern; son, Dean Burt; granddaughter Katie Chandler; Siblings: Cameron Burt.
