Gertruda Penner
1938 ~ 2021
Gertrude Penner was born October 8, 1938, the eighth child of twelve. Gertrude spent her early years living in various places: on a farm close to Altona, in Mather and then Nesbitt before she did job training in Portage La Prairie. At age 27, she moved to Winnipeg to begin her work life. She spent many years working in various restaurants: The Chocolate Shop, Merteen’s, Tiffany’s, Bistro Dansk and more. Gertrude grew up attending the Mennonite Church but eventually found her way to the Grant Memorial Church where she was baptized on May 4, 1975. In later years, Gertrude attended the Bethel Mennonite Church. Her faith was a simple one. She trusted God and knew God loved her. She lived out her faith in deep love for serving others which took shape in her commitment by singing in church choirs. She volunteered three days a week at the MCC Thrift Store and helped to clean up after various potlucks. Generally, she was willing to give back wherever she could. In her early days, her passion included bowling and curling until that became too difficult for her. Gertrude showed great delight in embroidering, volunteer work, puzzling and her love for the Royal Family which was shown in her collection of pictures, magazines and memorabilia. Gertrude’s health problems resulted in time spent at various hospitals: Victoria, Deer Lodge and Misericordia Health Centre. Her last couple of years were spent at the Maples Long Term Care Home. She passed away there on Wednesday April 21, 2021.
Gertrude is survived by five sisters and three brothers: Ann Heinricks, Dave Penner, Mary Klassen, Susan Peters, John Penner, Eva Rostek, Bernie Penner and Rita Didyk. We love you and will miss you.
