September 12, 1957- June 29, 2023
It is with great sadness our family announces the passing of Husband, Dad, Brother, Grampa "Brampa", and Uncle, Gordon Brent Russell.
Gordie was born in Carman, Manitoba to Webb and Alice Russell. He was the youngest of eleven children. He grew up on the Barnsely farm until he moved to Calgary to work on the oil rigs. He returned to Manitoba to begin his career as a truck owner/operator at Arnold Brothers Transport, traveling across North America. On April 17, 1982, Gordie married Jacquie Waddell and they settled in Sperling where they continued to reside raising their children, Brent, and Kaitlin.
Gordie was predeceased by his mother and father; sisters Faye Lougheed, Ruth Horvath, Gwen Hingley; brothers Garry, Jim, Dale, and Blaine; sister-in-law Peggy Soutar-Russell; brother-in-laws Al Braun and Alex Horvath; mother-in-law Marlyn Waddell and father-in-law Kenneth Waddell; his faithful fur-friends Cash and Hemi.
He will be forever missed by his wife Jacquie Russell; children Brent (Steph), Kaitlin (Drew) and grandchildren Ken, Sloane, Poppy and Ashlyn.
Also left to mourn are brother Ron (Joan) Portage La Prarie; sisters Janet Braun, White Rock, and Bonnie Ressler (Dennis), Calgary; sister-in-laws Kathy Russell, Carman, Jo-Ann Waddell (Sarah), Sperling and Edna Luft (Blaine), Halkirk. As well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and his comfort cats Po & Eddie, who each held a special place in Gordie’s heart.
His memory will be forever cherished by his family, friends, the Sperling community and certainly his trucking brotherhood, locally and from across the country whom he continued to keep in touch with until his passing.
Gordon was a hard-working individual with a caring soul. Despite long periods of time away from his family while trucking he always made sure home-time was family time. He showed his love by making sure there was oil in our vehicles, or an extra couple of 20's in our wallets. He was the Grampa that got down to play, read stories on the couch and teach them about trucks.
He always took the time to stop and help someone on the highway or have a conversation with a neighbor. He took pride in the Sperling community, contributing where needed and as many people have said since his passing "he was a very good man."
Gordie enjoyed spending time at the family cabin at Big Whiteshell Lake. Fishing and slowing down on the pontoon boat. He especially enjoyed going there alone for some peace and quiet before anybody else arrived, to which he always welcomed. He had a taste for adventure, taking his family on a vacation in Australia and enjoyed his winter holidays to Mexico. He would be heard saying "go and see something new" to anyone that needed encouragement to GO!
A private interment at the Sperling Cemetery will be held on July 7th, with a Celebration of Life following at 3pm for all who wish to attend.
As an expression of sympathy, if friends so wish, donations may be made in Gordon's memory to the Sperling Fund c/o Carman Area Foundation.
