Cremation has taken place. At Henry’s request there will be no service. Ash interment will take place at a later date. Donations can be made in memory of Dad to PSP Society of Canada (pspsocietycanada.ca)
Henry Wiebe
1946 – 2021
Henry was born 24 April 1946 and grew up in Osterwick, MB. Dad shared many happy (and funny) stories of his younger years. His sister, Marge, proudly boasts that Dad was the fastest baseball player in town. He would also get into mischief with his older brothers, cousins and friends, and there were tales involving racing cars up and down Osterwick.
Dad married the love of his life, Marilynn, on 30 May 1970. They were sweethearts right through to the end, celebrating 50 years in 2020. They lived in Winnipeg where Dad started a landscaping company, Keystone Landscaping, in East St Paul with just a wheelbarrow and shovel. The company was in business for more than 30 years before Dad decided to retire. Mom and Dad moved around quite a lot in Winnipeg and other communities before settling in Darlingford. Then in 2017 they decided to move to the Sunshine Coast, BC.
He was a hard worker but he also found time to enjoy life. His love of sports saw him playing old-timer hockey into his late 50’s (we gave him the nickname of ‘twinkletoes Wiebe’ as he was a natural skater), his company had a baseball team for many years, he was a season ticket holder of the Blue Bombers for more years than we can remember. He also enjoyed NASCAR race days. Later, he would spend hours watching sports on television. Dad loved music, especially country, bluegrass and folk. He had a knack at remembering TV and radio commercial jingles. Dad also loved cars and tinkering around with different trucks, tractors. A love for tractors and heavy equipment was something Jason (son) shared with Dad and they would talk for hours about the different cars in NASCAR. When time allowed, Dad loved to travel – driving trips across the US and Canada, and trips overseas. Dad loved to build things too – from sheds to garages to houses, and often family and friends would join in. He enjoyed going for coffee to meet up with his friends, especially in Darlingford.
To sum up Dad would be difficult, although all who knew him would say that he was kind and good-natured. Dad took everything in stride right through to the end and without a complaint.
Dad was diagnosed with PSP (Progressive Supranuclear Palsy) in Nov 2018, although his symptoms started years before then. He died peacefully on Wednesday January 27th in Sechelt, BC.
Henry leaves to mourn his wife, Marilynn, and their two kids, Jason (Jen) and Laurie (Martin). Seven grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Along with his brothers, Pete, Ben, Abe and sister, Marge and their families and his in-laws, Isaac, Yvonne (Reg), Norman, Lorne and Doreen. Many nieces and nephews and cousins. Henry was predeceased by his parents, John and Mary Wiebe, brother John, and sister Mary.
Dad loved to go for a drive, and his final request was for ‘his two girls’ (Marilynn and Laurie) to take him on a road trip from BC back to Manitoba. And that is what we will do. We miss you Dad, your smile and your laugh. Dad’s final wish to everyone is in the song called ‘Box of Visions’ by Tom Russell and Iris Dement… “keep an angel on your shoulder, never throw your dreams away.”
The family would like to thank the amazing team of doctors, nurses and healthcare workers that cared for Dad over the last few years.
