Peacefully on September 7 with family by his side Hugh left his earthly life at the age of 104 to join his dear wife Grace and numerous other beloved family members on Heaven’s great shores.
Hugh was born in Roseisle Manitoba, the eldest child of Del and Edith Clearwater. He spent his childhood on the family farm and settled just across the road where he lived most of his adult life. In July of 1940 he married Grace McKnight and they would spend the next 52 years side by side. Although they did not have children of their own, they were adored by several generations of nieces and nephews. Hugh’s adult years were spent farming and working as a mechanic at the Co-op in Carman. He was known in the community for his excellent work and ability to fix and build things. He also played a role in developing the town of Roseisle and surrounding farm community. He truly loved being in the country and in nature.
Hugh was a quiet and kind man who made others feel at ease. He was hard working and his hands could definitely attest to that. He was always quick to lend a helping hand and never turned down an opportunity to hunt or fish with family and friends. He was a humble, patient, and skilled teacher and there are many hunters and fishermen who learned all they know from him. He loved a good story and could often be seen wiping away his tears from laughing so hard. He was always game for a good practical joke and often got himself in trouble with Grace for the mischief he got himself and others involved in. He also loved to take camping trips where there was more often than not fishing involved!
Hugh loved his family and was always there to do whatever needed to be done. He often drove from Roseisle to Dryden to visit with his sister well into his 90’s and never stopped taking care of his brother Bert. He loved family gatherings and times with friends who seemed to always make a point of stopping by if they were in the area. Many were blessed by his generosity and help. He will be deeply missed, loved, and cherished by all who knew him.
While his last years were difficult with memory fading away and his body failing him he never lost his gentle smile, kind nature, or sweet presence. He lived well, worked hard, and did not let things get in his way. Even to the end he did it his way and on his terms. He gave everything as long as he could and it can truly be said “well done”!
Hugh is predeceased by his parents (Del and Edith), brothers (Charlie and Bert), wife Grace, sisters-in-law (Myrtle, Marion, Eleanor, and Jean), and many other cherished family members.
He is survived by his sister (Charlotte), brother-in-law (Gordon) and many nieces and nephews.
A private family gathering will be held on Monday September 13, 2021 in Carman MB with Interment in the Roseisle Cemetery.
