Irene Catherine Ewert, the daughter of Sebastian and Elizabeth (Richter) Martian was born May 23, 1938, at Harvey ND. Irene was three years old when her mother died. Her father remarried Theresa Venhaus and she was raised by her father and stepmother.
Irene attended schools in Selz and Harvey to the eighth grade. As a teenager she worked in a drycleaner, ironing clothes. Early in her marriage she operated the café in Anamoose ND. When the family moved to Minnesota, she began providing daycare in her home. Irene continued to be a daycare provider for approximately twenty more years. She dedicated her life to caring for others, raising many children as her own. Irene was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.
Irene married Marvin Ewert on April 13, 1957, at Fort Gordon GA. They lived in Anamoose ND, Webster ND, and St. Paul Park MN before moving to Devils Lake in 1970, where they lived for many years before both she and Marvin entered the nursing home in Lakota.
Irene is survived by her son Richard Ewert, Apache Junction AZ; daughters Pam Ewert, Pat Ewert and Terri (Roger) Gunderson all of Devils Lake; grandchildren Seth Ewert, Kelcee (Garett Baker) Ewert, and Christian (Layla) Ewert all of Devils Lake, Laura Ewert, Mayville ND, Allison Ewert, Mitchel Ewert, Draven Ewert, Stephanie (Tim) Yager and Elizabeth (Ryan) Gibbons all of Devils Lake; great grandchildren Aiden, Mason, Tysen, and Malina Ewert, Avery and Kayden Yager, Kalila Gibbons; sister Margaret Wagner, Minot ND; brother and sister-in-law Duane and Alice Martian, Portland OR.
Irene was preceded in death by her husband Marvin on February 13, 2022, her parents, siblings Conrad Martian, Helen Ayers, Agnes Boekhout, and Jerome Martian, brother-in-law Don Wagner and nephew Korey Wagner.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, June 6, 2022, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Devils Lake with Reverend Steven Wirth celebrating the Mass. Visitation will be held on Monday, one hour prior to the funeral Mass at the church. Burial will be at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Cemetery in Anamoose ND on Monday, June 6, 2022, in the afternoon.
