Jimmy Dean Bakken was born on January 31st,1960 in Minot ND to the late Gilman and Isabelle (Lemmage) Bakken. Jimmy was the 8th of 10 children. The family lived in Wilton ND, moved to Stanton, ND; where Jim started school., When the Nekoma Missle Base started construction moved to Milton ND.; where Jim graduated.
Jim enjoyed playing basketball in high school scoring the most points in a game. This was when the buckets were counted as 2. He met the love of his life, Judy Samuelson, at the 1978 girls basketball tournaments in Adams. She moved up a row and ‘accidentally’ sat in his lap.
Jim worked as a welder at Fargo Tank in Fargo, ND. He worked for the Samuelson Dairy farm for a year. Six months after Judy’s graduation, Jim and Judy were married at the Adams Mountain Lutheran Church, in Adams ND on November 22, 1980. They joined in with Judy’s parents Grade A dairy farm milking cows. When Judy’s dad passed away in 1984 in 1986 they sold the cows. Jim worked at a gas station in Park River and he spent some time in Killdeer working as a carpenter. They purchased Judy’s family farm in 1988. In 1990, Jim joined the Union in Fargo ND as a Millwright, working on equipment at the Sugar Beet plants. He transferred his Union book to Bismarck ND and worked in the upper Midwest on the Power Plants . One of his accomplish-ments was to be the Crane operator when loading a Generator onto a trailer to be sent for repairs on Russia’s Worlds Largest Cargo Jet He was forced into retirement due to many medical conditions
Jim was a Cub Scout leader, A member of the Grace Free Lutheran Church council, He enjoyed fishing and teaching others to fish. He was an avid hunter of deer, turkeys, pheasants, antelope, taking his family
Elk hunting in Colorado, and took special pride in bringing the first gopher shot into the Edinburg Hardware store, earning himself a box of 22 shells many years. He was a member of the men’s and couples bowling leagues in Adams. He taught them how to process the meat they harvested and make sausages to enjoy all year . They would raise or buy pigs and process them at home. Jim enjoyed entering demolition derbies in the area and racing his 1969 Chevy Nova.
Jim is survived by his wife Judy, 2 sons; Jamie (Amy) Isabelle and Silas of Kindred ND, and Jeremy of Fairdale. Siblings; Joanne Kelly, Fargo ND, Diana (Dean Zuraff) Bossert, Mandan, Larry Bakken, Steven’s Point WI: Danny (Dianne)Bakken, Stanton ND; Bonnie (Myron) Harsch, Coleharbor ND; Linda (Ron) Kendall, Big Lake MN; Terry (Laurie) Bakken Killdeer/Garrison ND, and Randy (Melissa) Bakken. Cando ND; Mother in law Sandra Samuelson, Park River, ND; Sister in law Brenda (Lowell) Watt, Fargo, ND; many nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents one brother, Jerry, father in law, Reif (Bud) Samuelson; and sister in law Darlene.
Memorial services will be Wednesday, June 30, 2021 at 10:30 A.M. at the Grace Free Lutheran Church of Edinburg, ND. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Inurnment will be at West Adams Lutheran Cemetery.
