John M. Bishop was born June 13, 1929 on the family farm in Walsh County, North Dakota, to the late Valentine and Julia (Byzewski) Bishop. He was inducted into the U.S. Army serving from 1952-1954. He was assigned to Virginia, Japan and Korea. After his discharge he returned home and farmed with his father. During the winter months he would work in California at an aircraft factory. John was united in marriage to Geraldine Uran on May 29, 1974 in New Town, North Dakota. The couple and their daughter Gloria made their home near Warsaw. He farmed until retirement, then grew a garden every year afterwards. Geraldine passed away on the farm on August 5, 2011. John continued to make his home on the farm until the time of his death.
He was a member of the St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, Warsaw, ND, the East Grand Forks VFW, the East Grand Forks American Legion Post and the National Rifle Association. He loved to spend time with his family and was very proud to have the St. Joseph Chapel on his property. He loved to take care of his lawn, garden, going to the VFW fish fry and the casino.
John is survived by his daughter, Gloria (Scott) Schmitt, Emerado, ND; his grandchildren: Amanda (J.T.) Hodny, Fargo, ND; Ashley Wippler, Grand Forks, ND; Jennifer Wippler, Emerado, ND; Jessica Wippler, Grand Forks, ND; his great grandchildren: Cohen, Gemma and Eva Hodny and Caden Wippler; his sister, Irene Meiers, Grand Forks, ND; his puppies, Midnight and Angel; his close nephew, Freddie (Marie) Slominski and close niece, Jeanette Stoltman; along with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Valentine and Julia, wife Geraldine, grandson Devin Wippler, sisters: Rose, Frieda, Helen and Marie.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, October 28, 2023 at 10:30 A.M. at the St. Stanislaus Catholic Church of Warsaw, ND. Visitation will be on Saturday for one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at the St. Stanislaus Catholic Cemetery. Military Rites will be provided by the East Grand Forks American Legion Post and the North Dakota National Guard Honor Guard.
