John Fehr
1924 ~ 2023
Our Dad was born in a shack in the Wakeham District about 10 miles south of Morden. At a very young age they moved to the Roseville District south of Rosenfeld where he spent all his growing up years.
He was not keen on school, saying "that's where they make you sit until four o'clock". Then soon stayed home to work on his parent's farm.
As a teenager with his dad's permission he and his brother seeded some sunflowers and sold the crop which was a worthy return. With that money he bought a 1927 Chevy Town Sedan that his parents drove and his first guitar from the Eatons catalogue. He then needed lessons to play the guitar so he caught rabbits in the field with a wire self built trap and sold the rabbit skins for 25 cents. That would pay for lessons taught from a neighbour who had learnt music in Wpg. Those three years of lessons sustained him until he picked up the guitar again in his retirement.
As a young man he was baptized upon the confession of his Faith. He took that very seriously as he always relied on that Faith to help him through rough times in his life.
As a young man he worked as a mechanic in the Rosenfeld garage. After that Dad took a train to Flin Flon to work in the diamond mines for a few months. Then when electricity came to southern Manitoba he trained for one day, then he used that skill to wire some local homes.
In the summer of 1950 he married Nettie Neufeld. Soon moved to Gretna where he worked as a carpenter building elevators in varies local towns. At one point when all the roof shingles were complete except for the last row of which had to be done outside, no other builder attempted this so Dad offered to do it. With no harness or safety netting , simply standing on a wooden plank he finished the job.
In 1951 they moved to a farm in the Thames district [Bergfeld] south east of Plum Coulee. Together with Mom they cared for land, cows, pigs and chickens. They both found pleasure in working side by side on the farm for 40 years.
In 1991 they moved to Plum Coulee. Dad then volunteered at the Pembina Threshersman's Museum for 15 years where he formed many life long friends. At this time he also learnt his guitar afresh and joined with the Farmer's Orchestra and played guitar at varies local places.
In 2016 they moved to Winkler to down size even further. In Dec 2021 Mom passed away. In 2022 Dad moved to Homestead in Morden for four months. After that he was cared for at BTHC. He moved to Pembina Manitou Health Centre for his last two days of life.
Dad had a gentle and kind demeanor. Words can not express the patience he had dealing with adverse farming times, caring for Mom and then in his own failing health issues. He relied totally on his Heavenly Father to take things in stride when he often needed extra strength to go on and even now when he could no longer take care of himself. He was grateful for all the nursing staff that tenderly care for him. He loved them all. He joyfully celebrated his 99th birthday on July 18 at BTHC.
He was predeceased by his wife Nettie of 71 years of marriage in 2021. He leaves to mourn his passing 3 daughters and 1 son. Susie and Murray Day, Katie and Jake Friesen, Jake Fehr and Margaret and Jerry Stoesz, ten grandchildren, 16 great grand children, extended family and many friends.. He was the oldest of 10 children and has left to mourn youngest sister Sarah.
The family wishes to thank the BTHC nursing staff, Dr Allan [ER] , Dr Sananawalia and Dr Convery for their exceptional care that Dad got.The homecare workers at Homestead and also the Pembina Manitou Health Centre for their compassionate care in the last 2 days of his life.
