Kenneth Henry Loewen
1943 - 2023Kenneth Henry Loewen died suddenly and unexpectedly at home in the early hours of Feb. 1. He was 79. Later that morning Ken was to have had knee replacement surgery, meant to add years of cycling, camping and traveling which he so loved. Instead, it seems God made all things new for him that day.
Ken was predeceased by his parents Henry and Margaret (Penner) Loewen, an infant sister Mirian, brothers-in-law Frank Thiessen and Bernard Thiessen, his parents-in-law Peter J. and Clara Epp and brother-in-law Marvin Mirochnick. Left to remember him in love are his beloved wife of 56 years, Eva (Epp), son Darryl and Colleen, grandson James and Laura; son Kevin and Sherry, grandson Carter and granddaughter Kassidy; sisters Margret Thiessen and Alvina Thiessen; sisters/brothers-in-law Viola Mirochnick, Irene and Frank Goertzen, Esther and Wayne Guenther, Martha and Isbrand Hiebert, Ed and Donna Epp; many nieces, nephews and their families.
Ken was born in Altona. He grew up a farm kid, on a quarter section southeast of Carman where his teaching career and young family would find their beginning. Ken loved the farm, but it would not be his life’s work. Education, administration and leadership, especially in the broader context of Mennonite community life, would be his vocation. Carman Collegiate, Mennonite Collegiate Institute, Garden Valley Collegiate and Eden Health Care Services were his paid career. He loved these agencies of church and community life. As a volunteer he devoured committee work: Manitoba Mennonite Youth Organization, various Mennonite Church commissions and congregational boards, MDS, credit unions, professional associations, community boards... There was almost no end to his eagerness to be involved. His associations were vast; friendships many. His love for collaborators in these settings, beyond his words.
Ken’s love for others was best expressed in hospitality. Together with Eva, their home was a gathering and feasting place. Loewens, Epps, extended families, visiting church partners, hockey and volleyball teams, neighbours in Lindenwood Villa, gangs of their children’s and grandchildren’s friends; all were welcome at their table. And all would receive an exhausting set of instructions about how to proceed to pick up their food and drink and napkins and cutlery and find their chair and take second helpings...as though no one had ever been to a party!
This was the expanse of Ken’s love, even to his last days. It was his understanding of God’s love for humanity.
A memorial service and reception at Bethel Mennonite Church, 465 Stafford St, Winnipeg, on Tuesday, Feb. 7 at 2:00pm. If so desired, donations in Ken’s memory may be made to Camps With Meaning or Mennonite Central Committee Manitoba.
