Lorna was born at home in a log cabin, on a homesteading quarter near Spirit River, Alberta. She was predeceased by her infant twin brother. Her parents were Pansy Sweet of Thornhill, Manitoba and Vernon Pockett of Kelwood, Manitoba. Lorna and her younger sisters, Kae and Florence moved to Manitoba with their mother in 1942. Lorna received her high school education at Gordon Bell Collegiate. She taught on permit for one year at Eriksdale. In 1952 she completed her Registered Nurse training from Children’s Hospital in Winnipeg during the height of the 1950’s polio epidemic. She started her nursing career at Morden General Hospital and the following year was asked to be Matron of Nursing. At a rural dance, she met a young farmer, Gerald Barclay from Darlingford. They were married in 1955, after the harvest was off. With kindness and generosity, they raised their three children, on the family farm in the Barclay District. Lorna continued to nurse and was employed at the Morden Clinic for twenty- three years. Lorna was active in the community of Darlingford, teaching CGIT and 4-H. She was a strong supporter of the United Church Women organization at the local and provincial level. She supported Amnesty International, served on the Boundary Trails Healthcare Auxiliary and volunteered at the former Tabor Home for fifteen years. Lorna was a woman of action, who liked to get things done and care for others.
She is survived by her husband of sixty-six years, her two sisters, her children, Barbara (Conrad Grexton), Cathy (Doug Lone) and Kent (Patti Barclay), her grandchildren, Ava and Jennifer Grexton, Graham and Kelly Lone and her two great grandchildren, Saveta and Orin.
