Marie Hildebrand (nee Knelsen)
1930 ~ 2021
Marie Hildebrand was born on January 14, 1930, in Hague, Saskatchewan, to John and Margaret Knelsen (nee Hildebrand) and passed into glory on Thanksgiving Day, October 11, 2021 at 5:37 am.
Marie was the oldest child of the family and had 3 brothers, one to ten years younger than her; Ike, John and Abe. She outlived each of them by 17 to 21 years. Shortly before her youngest brother’s passing in 2004, he gave her a prophetic word saying she would live to be 92 years old. It was short by 3 months and 3 days. One brother-in-law and 4 sisters-in-law from Marie’s generation remain to commemorate her graduation to eternity. Marie attended the Passchendael school in Saskatchewan till she was eleven years old in 1941 at which time her family moved to Schanzenfeld, Manitoba. As much as Marie had enjoyed school, her formal academic studies were terminated in favor of earning wages to help support her family. As a young adult, Marie spent 3 years working in the Morden Meat Store which provided a very valuable experience for her as she realized she enjoyed working in public and meeting people.The Lord Jesus became a very close friend and guide for Marie during her teenage years. She enjoyed young people’s meetings and choir practice. Marie was baptized upon the confession of her faith in 1952. In 1953, Marie met Peter Hildebrand. They were married on November 14, 1954 and took over the Hildebrand farm near Plum Coulee where they lived 42 years until Peter’s premature death in 1996. They joined the Plum Coulee Mennonite Bergthaler Church shortly after their marriage. They were both sensitive in contributing to the Lord’s work and loved supporting missions and missionaries. Mom’s high energy, task-oriented personality was a great asset and complimented the mixed farming operation they shared. A preschool collage of memories sees that while Dad was doing custom baling and field work in the Summer and Fall months, Mom would be organizing the work load from a party line phone wired to a wall in the kitchen, milking the cows, feeding the chickens, gathering their eggs and grading them, tending and harvesting large gardens, doing loads and loads of laundry without the use of running water or sewage system, cooking, feeding and looking after us three older children. Shortly before their youngest child was born, Mom was introduced to the Hillestad’s Hilcoa brand of food supplements for people. Somewhat reluctant at first, the concept that if animals, which ate whole grains and grasses needed additional supplements, maybe people should consider supplementing too. So she bought two boxes; one to use and one to sell. The results she noticed for herself soon sold the second box, and then another box, and another box, and soon realized she had a flourishing business. Complimentary products like flour mills, dough makers, exercise equipment, and unofficially organic grains, goat milk, range fed boilers and eggs were also sold. Even though most of Mom and Dad’s friends did not become customers for vitamins, most vitamin customers did become lifelong friends. It was always interesting to hear how many people were helped nutritionally, spiritually, or emotionally when they came to hear Mom’s life experiences as she shared with them in her farm office.
Peter and Marie’s four children and spouses, Robert (Shirley), Ron (Lydia), Sheila (Henry), Jolene (Wayne), together with their respective children and grandchildren, about 74 people in total solemnly reflect on the new reality of this phase of the legacy you have entrusted us with. You’ve done well Mom. We’re proud of you and we love you. Enjoy the eternal rewards you have worked so hard to achieve.
