A gathering to celebrate Marilyn’s Life will be held at Avondale United Church, 194 Avondale Avenue, Stratford, on December 15, 2022. A visitation will be from 10-11 am with a service immediately following. Marilyn Hester Day, age 71, passed away peacefully Friday November 11, 2022 at Jessica’s House Residential Hospice in Exeter.
Born on June 28, 1951 in Stratford, she is the daughter of the late Harry and Beula Day. Beloved sister of Ruth Hough (Duncan) of Napanee Ontario, and Nancy Day of Stratford. Lovingly remembered by nephews David Hough (Lisa) and Andrew Hough (Julie), and niece Karen Stauffer (Ben). Proud Great-Aunt of Ross, Meagan, Jean, Matthew, Daniel, Jonathon, Leah and Paul.
Growing up she played many different sports, excelled at school, loved going to the Festival Theatre and made many friends. Marilyn graduated from the University of Guelph with a Bachelor of Science in Human Kinetics and then went to McMaster to study medicine. After internship and residency in Winnipeg, Marilyn joined the medical clinic in Winkler, Manitoba as a family doctor. In addition to her family practice, Marilyn assisted in covering the emergency room, delivered babies, and assisted with surgeries. Her life was filled with her work, family and friends, travel, theatre (professional, community and school based) and planning theme parties for the Clinic or with friends.
Marilyn retired in 2016 and moved back into the house where she grew up in Stratford. Early in 2020 she was diagnosed with ALS. With the support of her sister, Nancy, and home care staff, Marilyn lived at home enjoying life, even with ALS. In April 2022 she moved to Jessica’s House where she received incredible care and support. Family and friends were able to visit and enjoy time together. Marilyn was Marilyn until the end.
Marilyn has always been interested in people. She listened intently, asked questions, and supported family, friends, and patients alike. After her retirement, several colleagues commented on how “spoiled” her patients were. Her joy in life, compassion and helping hand have been appreciated by many. She will be missed by her family, friends, neighbours, and the many people whose lives she touched.
Marilyn and her family greatly appreciate the loving support and care of the home care workers, the ALS Society of Canada (especially Sheila Dorsch and the people living with ALS on the Support Group Zoom calls), the staff and volunteers of Jessica’s House, friends and neighbours, Dr. Shoesmith and the staff of the ALS Clinic in London, Dr. Thimm, and the Reverend Keith Reynolds.
