Mary Krahn (nee Hiebert)
1933 ~ 2023
Peacefully on Thursday early morning, September 7, 2023 at Boundary Trails Health Centre, Mary Krahn at the age of 90 years, went to be with her Saviour, with her family at her side.
Mary was born on March 22, 1933 to Peter and Margaret Hiebert. She was baptized upon confession of her faith in 1952 at the Winkler Bergthaler Church. On April 19, 1953 Mary and Abe Krahn were married. They shared 53 years together.
Mary is survived by her children, Marlene (John)Toews, Alvin (Tammy) Krahn, Loretta (Harold) Friesen, Leona (Mark) Czoch, 12 grandchildren and their spouses, along with 25 great grandchildren. Two sisters, Margaret (George) Ens and Dorothy (Frank) Giesbrecht. On Dad’s side one brother in-law, Bill Krahn, two sisters in-law, Sophie Krahn and Ann Krahn. Also, numerous nieces and nephews.
Mary truly enjoyed her entire family and celebrated each addition. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren held a special place in her heart. Mom’s door was always open to us and gatherings were never too much work.
Mom’s early years were spent growing up in Reinfeld with her parents, 6 sisters and 1 brother. They were a family that showed us what it means to work, play, and cook together with plenty of joy and laughter. In Mary’s adult life she worked as a kjaakjsche, store clerk, field worker, marketed raspberries from her garden and a house painter. She had a zest for life and seemingly an endless supply of energy, even until her last months at home. She found things to do to keep herself occupied. Never time to be bored. Hobbies Mom loved were bowling, puzzling, canning, and watching curling. She was generous and loved meeting new people, especially people who cared for her like the Public Homecare and Samaritan Wellness Homecare attendants. Mom’s weekly visit by her housekeeper, Susan was always appreciated by her and it became more than just cleaning, they became good friends.
The majority of Mom and Dad’s years were spent farming in the Meath District and Friedensruh area while raising their four children. In 1990 they moved to Winkler and together enjoyed 16 years of retirement. They enjoyed being a part of their grandchildren’s lives often supporting them by coming to watch their sporting events, drama and musical productions. Their home became a drop-in center for the grandchildren. In late 2006 Mom and Dad moved to Cedar Estates. Mom lost the love of her life in January 2007. Over the years she enjoyed and loved her local community and spent a lot of hours fellowshipping with her 3rd floor family.
Mom was admitted to the hospital on July 25, 2023. When she became hospitalized, she had pneumonia and cellulitis. She expressed hopes of getting better even in her last week of life here on earth. God had another plan for her. She remained strong in her faith in Jesus to the end. Her kindness, gentleness and fun-loving spirit will be missed, by us all.
A sincere thank-you to the many health care providers that cared for Mom in her home, prior to her hospitalization. Through these resources, Mom’s wish to stay in her home, as long as possible, became a reality. Also, to the kind staff that took care of Mom at the Boundary Trails Health Centre.
Thank-you to Wiebe Funeral Homes for their caring expertise.
