Rae was born on March 24, 1931 in Ben Claire, SD, to William and Pearl (Armentrout) Meier. In 1941 the family moved to Grafton where the family established the Grafton Paint & Glass. In 1949 she graduated from Grafton High School. Upon graduation she attended the University of ND where she studied journalism. She was united in marriage on December 7, 1950 to John F. (Jack) Desautel in Grafton, ND. They made their home on the family farm north of Grafton where they lived for 40 years.
Rae served in many capacities with numerous organizations, some of which include serving as president of ND Agri-Women; Writing a column in the Walsh County Record called “The Nash Rambler” for 30 plus years; working for the Unity Medical Hospital Foundation; and serving on the Board of Historic Elmwood. She was also a faithful member of St. John’s Catholic Church and served many years on St. John’s Altar Society. Throughout her life, she and Jack enjoyed traveling, their birthday club, and especially spending time with her family.
Rae is survived by her husband Jack; daughter Zebbie Hoenke , Grafton, ND; son Jay (Jan) Desautel, Moorhead, MN; grandchildren Christopher (Jennifer) Hoenke, David (Jaime) Hoenke, Nicholas (Amanda) Desautel, Katelyn (Charlie) Thompson all of Grafton, ND, Brandon (Courtney) Desautel, Glyndon, MN, Parker (fiancee Lex Bradley) Desautel, Minneapolis, MN; great grandchildren Laith & Izley Hoenke, Brayden, Harlow & Brynn Hoenke, Annie & Jack Desautel all of Grafton, ND, and Hadleigh Desautel, Glyndon, MN.
She is preceded in death by her parents; brother, Gerald Meier; infant child; son John; and son-in-law Kevin Hoenke.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, January 5, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John’s Catholic Church, Grafton, ND, with a visitation from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. prior to the service. Interment will be at St. John’s Catholic Cemetery.
