Reginald Thomas Stow April 12, 1935 – October 31, 2023.
Reginald (Reg) Stow passed away peacefully on October 31, 2023 at the Boyne Lodge in Carman. He was predeceased by his parents - Nora Estella Bessie Stow (nee Murray) and Thomas James Stow. His brothers, Alex Stow and Douglas Stow, sisters in law Pamela Stow and Kay Stow, brother in law Robert Harrison, and parents in law Leonard and Patricia Robertson. Left to mourn his passing are wife Beverly, daughter Jennifer (Scott Seward) and grandsons Dylan and Nicholas, cousins John and Carol Findlay of Pinawa, brother Jim (Janice), and sisters in law Judith Harrison (Robertson) and Shirley Stow (Nesbitt). As well as many, cousins, nieces, nephews and their families.
Reg was born on the family farm at Graysville, near Carman, Manitoba. He was the third, of what would eventually be four Stow brothers that were all heavily involved in the Agriculture Industry in Southern Manitoba. Reg, along with his brothers and father, invested in many initiatives in Agricultural research and development relevant to the times.
In August 1963, Reg married Beverly Robertson from Snowflake, MB and they continued to work together with his brothers until the late 1960’s when they branched out on their own. In the mid to late 1970’s and 1980’s, Reg worked with institutions and people in North Dakota, Michigan, Idaho and Ontario, to develop a dry edible bean processing facility, which went on to export dry edible beans, grown by Graysville and area farmers, domestically and internationally. He was a founding board member and President of the Manitoba Pulse Growers’ Association and lobbied successfully so that Manitoba dry bean growers could have the same financial opportunities as Eastern Canadian producers.
Reg was a member of both the Graysville Tractor club and 4-H Beef club, and when the opportunity arose once again, later in life, to get involved in beef cattle, he and Beverly added a few cows and a mixed farming element to their operation. Later, with the help of a wandering neighbor’s bull a few years later, it became a cow/calf operation. Growing up in a beef family, and the 4-H Beef program, Reg developed an exceptional eye for the selection of supreme livestock to build a commercial herd. His low calving ease, high rate of gain selections are still a part of his daughter and son-in-law’s cattle herd today.
Reg sat on other provincial Agricultural and rural based boards and committees, including the Manitoba Canola Growers’ Association and the Prairie Grain Development Committee (PGDC). He was a member of the National Farmers Union and a proud Select Seed grower and member of the Canadian Seed Growers’ Association. Locally he sat as a board member and later a Trustee on the Graysville United Church board, and was granted an honorary life membership from the Dufferin Agricultural Society.
The family would like to extend our gratitude to the staff at the Boyne Lodge for the excellent care dad received. We will forever be grateful for the compassion, dignity and patience they showed both us and dad in his final years.
