Rene Phillippe Nadeau died peacefully on July 6, 2022, at Riverview Health Centre at the age of 83. Rene is survived by his daughter Lisa (Bing), and granddaughters Caitlin (Fred) and Jane (Jair). He also leaves to mourn his brother Gilbert (Joyce), sister Vivian Johnson, brother Gerald (Lorraine), sister Diane (Philippe) Desilets, and numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and dear friends.
Rene was predeceased by Pat, his wife of 57 years, in 2020; his parents Cecile and Celestin Nadeau; sister Beatrice and brother-in-law Denis Prive; and brother-in-law Marshall (Putz) Johnson.
Born and raised in Fannystelle Manitoba, Rene enjoyed many years of welding, farming, and gardening. Rene became a welder at a young age and worked at a number of jobs to secure his future doing what he enjoyed most - farming. In 1963, Rene married Pat and they had their daughter Lisa a few years later. After retiring from farming, he kept busy on projects puttering around in his workshop.
He frequently took trips to Calgary to visit Lisa and her family, always helping them with various projects and spending time with them. Rene had a very special relationship with his grandaughters or “little girls”, as he called them, no matter how old they were. He allowed them to paint his nails and style his hair and spent hours in the shop creating birdhouses and other projects with them. Whenever he was out to visit, Jane would feign illness to stay home from school to hang out with Pepere.
Rene was very handy and always building (a skill he learned from Mon Oncle Desire) and repairing everything. He never worried about keeping up with the latest and was content to keep using everything until it was no longer fixable. For this reason, he likely holds a record for having the same lawn mower for over 40 years.
Rene continued to reside in Fannystelle until 2021 when he moved into Shaftesbury Retirement Residence in Winnipeg. He endeared himself to the staff and residents at Shaftesbury, always stopping to talk or wave.
Rene was cherished by everyone who knew him. He was known and loved as “Pepere” to not only his granddaughters, but all of their friends and extended family members too.
Rene was loved dearly and will be missed by many. He taught us to appreciate a good coffee break and not to take things too seriously. We will always remember him wearing his “Ski-doo” suit and toque (or block-heater as he called it), keeping busy with projects in the house, the shop, and the garden, and riding his red Honda mini bike around the farm to check on the crops.
We are grateful for all the love and support throughout dad’s illness, and especially for Auntie Vivian and our dear friends Andrea and Doug - for running errands, bringing him treats, taking him on drives in the country, and always making sure he was looked after. Many thanks to dad’s care team: Dr. Jeanelle Braun, Marnie and Tawny from In Good Hands, the staff at Shaftesbury, and the palliative and home care staff.
A private family gathering will be held.
