Mom’s greatest aspiration was to be a good person. Her kindness, her sense of humour, her sense of justice and her curiosity about everything will always be an inspiration. In honour of Mom’s life please share a kindness with others.
Mom was ahead of her time, running the farm and agri-business in Brunkild with our dad Sandy and brother Lynn. She loved being a farmer and was so proud of it. She loved to be creative and be involved in the community while always being a present mother raising us four kids. She never stopped for one minute. She still found time to write “Letters to the Editor” which were most often published. She spoke out on topics from Sue Rodrigues to Gary Milgaard. People would stop Mom on the street and say, “Ruth I read your letter in The Winnipeg Free Press and that is exactly what I was thinking.” Community was important to Mom. She was a schoolteacher, a music teacher, sat on the town planning for the municipality and was always there to help in the organization of events when the major floods threatened to overtake the town. She would write school plays and speeches for local farmers who needed to get a point across. She was the first woman School Trustee in the Morris-McDonald municipality, she was the President of the local WI (Women’s Institute) and, as a member of the Brunkild Hall Board along with Dad was always working on helping make the community even better.
With her Grade 12 in music she played for the church and countless Christmas concerts for the Brunkild School. She said that she never really got to see us kids performing on stage because she was busy playing the piano. In these past years she had the treat of listening to Daitan play the piano for her. She loved listening to the songs he would play.
Her creativity extended to midnight painting of rooms while kids were asleep and rearranging the furniture to make her and Dad’s tiny house seem larger. Mom loved to be creative, writing, sewing, knitting, and painting. She wove her artistic abilities into almost every aspect of her life.
You know who you are if you were lucky enough to be on Mom’s homemade bun delivery list. Mom would make up a large batch of buns and then deliver them to friends around Brunkild. One day Mom had just mixed up a batch of buns and they were set to rise when Dad called from the shop and said she needed to drive to Carman right away to pick up some parts a farmer needed. How could she be home to bunch down the buns and be in Carman to pick up parts? Mom loaded up the big bowl of dough rising and put it into her truck so she could punch down the buns at the required intervals.
For Andrew & Rebecca’s special birthdays, Mom made signs and loaded up Victor with his accordion and headed to the city to play for the kids to their surprise and delight.
Mom liked to sew. One of things she loved was making Halloween costumes for us kids and then for the next generation with Andrew and Rebecca. One particular lion’s costume made its way through at least four Halloween’s with kids who were proud to don the costume.
A loyal friend, Mom remained close to many longtime friends throughout her life, dear friends, Mary, Emgard, Jeannie, Elsie, Mavis, Herb, Billie and Angele.
Our family would like to extend a special thank you to Ruthie’s Angels who helped care for Mom in these later years. We are grateful to Dr. Rumboldt and his assistant Karen who were always there for Mom. Thank you to the Westhaven and its residents, Chris Billows, the WRHA nurses, and Arnold Chew.

We will miss our dear, sweet Mom so much. She helped a lot of people and touched a lot of hearts.
To quote Ernest Hemingway “Mom, you are the finest, loveliest, tenderest, and most beautiful person we have ever known, but even that is an understatement.”
