Shirley “Chicken” Herman was born on October 24, 1959 to Ernest and Beulah (Parisien) Herman in Belcourt, ND. She was raised with her 11 sisters and brother in Devils Lake, ND.
She started her schooling at St. Michaels Missionary School and finished at Central High School. She worked many different jobs in the Devils Lake area and loved taking care of the elderly at the nursing home. Chicken loved helping people. She was a dedicated worker, and always willing to help.
Chicken’s life truly began when she and Gary Rodlin welcomed their first daughter, Tasha. Soon after that, they added Sarah. Chicken devoted her whole life to her girls, and would do anything to give them the world. With the birth of her only grandson Ashton, she would see her dreams and wishes fulfilled. As a grandmother she helped both daughters to raise him. Grandma was an intricate part of his everyday life. She truly lived for her “kids.”
Chicken lived her life with an open mind. She practiced an open door, and open-heart policy. She loved everyone whether 2 legs or 4. There wasn’t a person or animal she would cross without becoming a friend. She loved cooking for all of her friends and family. She often had coffee chats with old friends. She always had the most infectious laugh to share and would admirably call those she loved “my girl” or “my boy.” She gave everyone a place to feel at home.
Chicken is now reunited with her unborn Son and her daughter, Tasha Nicole Rodlin. She also proceeds sisters Betty Ann, Jeanette, Elsie, Deborah, Ernestine, Lucielle and brothers Alfred and Ernest Jr. as well as nephew Keith and many friends.
She is survived by daughter, Sarah Rodlin; Grandson, Ashton Rodlin; Father of her children and life friend, Gary Rodlin as well as her sisters Mary Jane Carlson, Yvonne Shipley, Toni “Che Che” Herman and Brenda Pendergast as well as her nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews who meant so much to her and her many friends.
May she be at peace and rest with our loved ones.
She will be missed.
