
Tom was born July 11, 1945 in Grand Forks, ND the son of the late Peter and Margaret (Schultz) Gerszewski. He attended rural school near Ardoch, ND and graduated from Minto High School in 1962. Tom enlisted in the United States Army in 1962. He served in several areas around the United States. Upon his discharge from the Army he joined the North Dakota National Guard for a total of 37 years, serving in Desert Shield and Desert Storm. He retired as a Staff Sgt. Thomas Gerszewski was united in marriage to Maureen Carpenter on September 11, 1965 in Grafton, ND. The couple made their home in Minneapolis, MN. They later moved to the family farm near Oslo, MN. In 1988 Tom started working for Marvin Windows. They moved to Warroad, MN and in the early 90’s the couple transferred to Fargo. In 1998 they moved to Minto and worked for Marvin Windows in Grafton. Following his retirement from Marvin’s he worked as the Veterans Service Officer for Walsh County until his health forced him to retire in 2009.
He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Minto, served as Past Commander of the Minto American Legion Post #201, served as chairman of the Hopkins, MN Raspberry Festival, served on the Minto City Council and Oslo School Board. He volunteered as a Foster Grandparent at the Grafton Elementary School. He was a member of the PNA, Knights of Columbus and VFW.
Tom is survived by his children: Thom Gerszewski, New Hope, MN; Maggie Gerszewski, Minto, ND; three grandchildren: Jacqueline, Clio and Kayl; three step-grandchildren; his former daughter-in-law, Laura Gerszewski; his brother, Michael Gerszewski, Minto, ND. Several nieces and nephews also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, daughter Jackie; two sisters and one brother.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday, January 21, 2021 at 10:30 AM at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Minto. A walk-through visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service. Social distancing and face masks are recommended. A live stream of the funeral will be available on the Tollefson Funeral Home Inc. Facebook page. Interment will be at St. John’s Catholic cemetery in the spring.
