Waina Marie Linstad was born August 5, 1958 in Grand Forks, ND the daughter of Marvin and Marilyn (Close) Linstad. She grew up and attended school in Fordville, graduating in 1976. She attended UND from 1976-77 and then transferred to Mayville State and attended there until 1979. Waina married Gary Helland in October of 1980. The couple made their home in Fordville where she worked for Bremer Bank. In 1996, Waina moved to Grand Forks and started working for First State Bank and Insurance. While in Grand Forks, she took several courses at UND. In August of 2012 she moved back to Fordville, due to her declining health. In 2019, she moved to the Park River Good Samaritan Center.
Waina was an active member of the Fordville Ambulance and was an EMT. She was a member of the Fordville American Legion Auxiliary. She had a great love of music and attended many concerts over the years with her sister, daughter and her close friends.
Waina is survived by her daughter; Britta (Jay) Jelinek, Fordville, ND; her mother, Marilyn Linstad, Fordville, ND; siblings: Kelly (Kevin) Kroke, Fargo, ND; Tami (Robin) Omdahl, Fordville, ND and Casey (Nicole) Linstad, Sugar Grove, IL; sister-in-law, Karen Johnson, Minnewaukan, ND. Several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins survive along with brothers and sisters-in-law. She was preceded in death by her father, Marvin, daughter Christa Helland, brother, Chris Linstad and her maternal and paternal grandparents.
A walk-through visitation will be held on Saturday, February 6, 2021 from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM at the Fordville Lutheran Church. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM at Fordville Lutheran Church. Social Distancing and face masks are required. The service will be live streamed on the Tollefson Funeral Home, Inc. Facebook page and a video of the funeral will be posted to Waina’s obituary on the Tollefson Funeral Home Website. Inurnment will be at Oak Grove Cemetery in Fordville in the spring. In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer memorials to the American Diabetes Association.
The family would like to express their thanks to the First Care Hospital and Staff for the great care Waina received there. They would also like to thank Fordville Lutheran Church for all their support during this time.
