Beloved wife of Henry Veldman, loving mother of Margaret, Kevin (Audrey), Jeff, daughter-in-law Wendy (Colin) MacKenzie. Loving grandmother of Keith (Olga), Cole, Scott, Brett (Casey), Taylor, Matthew, and 3 great-grandchildren.
Willemiene was born in Amersfoort, The Netherlands and immigrated to Canada with her family in 1954. She was second oldest of 11 siblings (predeceased by 1 brother) who all currently live in Canada. She worked hard in the sugar beet fields and the family farm in order to help support the family. After moving and working in Burlington, ON for a short time, she returned to Carman and married Henry in 1960. Farming was a major part of her life as she supported Henry in the grain elevators in Homewood, Swan Lake, Elm Creek, and Winnipeg. In addition, she drove truck for the Veldman Bros. crop spraying business. She was called “mom” by many and they all knew where they could help themselves to home-made cookies or butter tarts. She could be quite blunt when the situation called for it but her gruffness was outweighed by her often thoughtful comments and her interest in others. While she was healthy, she appreciated having people stop by and was always ready to share a coffee and a story, ask about you and provide a listening ear. For years she enjoyed watching her kids play hockey or figure skate, and loved curling with friends when she lived in Elm Creek. She enjoyed traveling and spent a lot of summers at the lake when her children were young. After retirement, both her and Henry spent their winters in Texas and made many more friends and memories.
