Dennis Pengilly, 79, of Langdon, ND, passed away December 23, 2021, at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND. Dennis LeRoy Pengilly was born in Langdon, ND, on February 20, 1942, to John and Mildred (Jordan) Pengilly of Wales, ND. He lived with his parents, brothers, and sisters for 18 years on the Pengilly farm.. He attended school in Hannah and Wales then graduated from Wales High School in 1961. He worked for Freeman Swenson and drove gravel truck during the summer months during high school then worked for Greenburg Construction in Grand Forks for 2 years after graduation. On July 31, 1964, he married his high school sweetheart, Norma J. Steinke, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Dresden, ND. Two sons, Dennis Wade and David John, made his family complete until the daughters-in-law and grandkids came along. He worked two years for Lampert Lumber and was produce manager for 8 years at the National Tea store. In 1971, Dennis became an agent for NoDak Mutual Farm Bureau Insurance. He retired from the insurance business in 2012. He dearly enjoyed all his customers and will be missed by all. Dennis was a great son, husband, and father and loved his grandkids dearly. Surviving Dennis are his wife of 57 years, Norma, of Langdon; sons: Dennis Wade (Becky) and David John (Danette); six grandchildren: Alanna Elise, Emily Anna, Ryan Patrick, Drew Thomas, Paige Renee, and Luke David; and siblings: Agnes (David) Lewis, Alice Jochim, Marlene (Jack) Brown, Tom (Cheryl) Pengilly, Candyce McLean, Marty (Sherry) Pengilly, and Kim Pengilly. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Dan and Larry. A memorial service will be held next spring or summer. Michael Lee Longie of Devils Lake and Fargo ND passed away on Thursday, December 23, 2021 at the age of 43. Funeral Services for Michael will be held on Tuesday, January 4, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at the Gilbertson Funeral Home Chapel, Devils Lake ND. Michael Lee was born on April 29, 1978 at Devils Lake, the son of Cynthia Longie. He grew up in Devils Lake and attended Sweetwater Elementary School and St. Joseph Academy. He loved and worked in various locations in North Dakota. For the past few years, Michael has called Fargo his home. Michael’s life was his family, his friends and fishing, a pastime he truly enjoyed. Michael has gone from us much too soon, but we hold our memories of him, and our love for him forever in our hearts. Michael is survived by his loving family. Viola Louetta Besse, age 103, of Austin, Minnesota, passed away Thursday, December 23, 2021, at Sacred Heart Care Center surrounded by family members singing her favorite song, “His Eye is on the Sparrow” with guitar and cello accompaniment. Viola was born in Crocus, North Dakota to George and Lou Wood. (George Bright McLellan Wood and Margaret Louetta Hart) on February 24, 1918. She attended grade school in Crocus and graduated from high school in Cando, North Dakota. She married Clarence (Cass) Arthur Besse on October 27, 1937 and they had four children, LaMoure, Austia, Richard and Bonnie. She lived in Crocus, Ellsbury, Starkweather and Devils Lake, North Dakota. After 4 score and 5 years of living on farms and small towns in North Dakota, she and Cass moved to Austin in 2003 to be closer to family. She lived at the Cedars until 2015 when she moved to Sacred Heart Care Center. She was such a joy to others. She played the piano, smiled, often said, “Thank you” and was content and caring to the end. She loved music and when she turned 95, she was honored by the Austin Symphony Orchestra for never having missed a concert since she had moved to Austin. She also loved flowers, sewing, handiwork, hardanger, crafts, and baking cookies and pies. She did a great deal of volunteer work in the church and was always faithful in attending. She was a 4-H leader, member of several book groups, Community Concert Charter Member, member of Homemakers Club and Al-Anon. Education was very important to her and she has a Viola Besse endowed scholarship through the Riverland Community College Foundation. But most of all, she was a wonderful wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandma, great grandma, friend and caretaker. She was very proud and thankful that she was able to care for her husband and two of her sisters in their old age. Viola is survived by her son LaMoure, his wife Pat (McLean), their daughter April Swenson (daughters Rebecca and Lily) and son John; her daughter Austia, her husband Joe Hickey, their son Eliot Lee; her son Richard, his wife Jill (Hines), their daughter Megan, her husband David Glanville (daughters Janie and Briel), son Adam and his wife Jessica (Leong); her daughter Bonnie, her husband Tim Rietz, their daughter Heidi Kimmel (sons Ethan, Tyler and Levi), their daughter Heather, her husband Jesse Winsell (daughter Nia and son Teague), their daughter Mindy, and her husband Ian Fowler (daughters Vivienne and Viola’s namesake Viola). She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and all 8 of her siblings. A Memorial Service will be held in the summer when family and friends can gather in Devils Lake, North Dakota where she will be buried next to her husband Cass. McCanna, 66 a life-long resident of Devils Lake ND passed away on Thursday, December 23, 2021, at Sanford on Broadway, Fargo ND with his son at his bedside. Mass of Christian Burial for Micky will be held on Thursday, December 30, 2021, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church with the Very Reverend C.F. Wilhelm celebrating the Mass. Burial will be in the Devils Lake Cemetery. Visitation will be at the Gilbertson Funeral Home on Wednesday, December 29th from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Michael Jay was born on August 3, 1955, in Devils Lake the son of James “Jay” and Delores “Del” (Wagner) McCanna. Micky was reared and educated in Devils Lake, attending Central High School. As a young man, he went to work at “Del’s Drive-In” to help support the family. Micky married his high school sweetheart, Maria Anne Solga on November 13, 1976, in Devils Lake. They lived, worked, and raised their family together through the years. Maria died on February 3, 2005. After Del’s closed, Micky began working in the health care field. His kind, caring and patient demeaner were valuable traits when he worked as a CNA at the Good Samaritan Care Center and Heartland Care Center. For many years, Micky worked with REM and had just recently retired from LRC. Micky was an exceptionally talented musician and was the drummer for several bands including “The Bee Jays,” “Reckless” and “Cross Country”. He loved the “band scene” but had to retire due to carpel tunnel issues. Micky had a passion for classic cars and was always part of “Devils Run.” He was a motorcycle enthusiast, so along with good friends Jay Tabor, Fran Schumacher and Rich De’Arton they were known as the “Over the Hill Gang” because they were riding Hardleys. Micky had so many losses in his life, but felt so very blessed to have his son Jay always there for him and to have so many loyal friends. Micky will be forever in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. Micky’s family include his loving son Jay and Dehan Schwan, Devils Lake; granddaughter Reygan McCanna, Roseau MN; brothers and sisters Earl “Sonny” McCanna, Devils Lake, Kathy Benson McCanna, Parrish, Florida, Jim McCanna, Las Vegas, Nevada, and Betty Ann Johnson also of Devils Lake ND; many nieces, nephews and their families. George Alexander Lewis, 92, of Rocklake, ND, passed away Wednesday, December 22, 2021 at the Towner County Living Center in Cando, ND. He received an invitation from his beloved wife, Shirley Lewis, that he couldn’t refuse—come join me in heaven. He is celebrating Christmas with Shirley and dancing until the late hours of the evening. He left instructions for his children to celebrate his life here on earth once his time was done. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, July 30, 2022 at 1 p.m. at the Dunnigan-Dix Funeral Home in Cando, ND. Burial will be at the All Nations Lutheran Cemetery, Rocklake, ND, following the service. Casket bearers are Gary Badding, Terrance Henriksen, Gary Hunt, Kim Kemp, Cody Lewis, David Lewis, and Aaron Thompson. Honorary casket bearers are members of the Brumwell-Gray American Legion Post 276. Memorials are preferred to All Nations Lutheran Cemetery Fund, Brumwell-Gray Legion Post 276, or the Towner County Medical Center Auxiliary. George Lewis was born on October 27, 1929 to Samuel and Annie Lewis in Cavalier County, ND. He was raised on the family farm and attended school in Calvin, ND. He met Shirley Pantsari at a dance in Rocklake and they fell in love. They were married September 29, 1950. The couple lived in Calvin and eventually moved to the Rocklake area in 1962 and continued to make Rocklake their home. He was married to his wife, Shirley, for 64 years when she passed away in 2015. Shirley and George spent summers camping at Rock Lake, Canada, for over 30 years. After retirement, they spent 15 winters in Edinburg, TX. George was very active in the community. He loved woodworking and spent many hours in his shop on various projects. He loved to camp and fish but most of all, he loved to tell stories. He looked forward to the Saturday Breakfast Club every Saturday morning at the Rock Lake Café before he became a resident of the Towner County Living Center in Cando in 2019. His last wishes were to be able to see all of his great grandchildren while he was alive and to make a trip to the Lewis (Badding) farm in Cavalier County. Both wishes were granted. He went to Minot State Teachers College in 1949 when he was drafted and served in the Army’s 113th Anti-Aircraft Artillery as a Fire Control Specialist. He went to Radar School at Fort Bliss, TX and was sent to Fort Sheridan in LaGrange, IL. He monitored the skies over Chicago during the Korean War. George remained on the inactive reserve following his active service and was discharged in 1953. After his discharge, he went back to college and graduated from Minot State Teachers College in 1957. He taught school before joining the US Customs Service in 1962. He served as Port Director of Customs at Hansboro, ND, for over 31 years. He had a total of 35 years of government service when he retired in 1994. George joined the Brumwell-Gray American Legion Post 276 in Sarles, ND, in 1960. He was the longest serving active member at the time of his passing. He participated in the Honor Flight for Korean War Veterans in 2017. Last summer, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal for his service during the Korean War. George is survived by his children, Cheryl Lewis of Rocklake, ND; Marilyn (Carl) Thoreson of Vero Beach, FL; Laurel (Keith) Vorachek of Sun City West, AZ; Evonne (Lauren) Langerud of Kent, WA; and David Lewis of Ash Grove, MO; grandchildren Aaron (Katie) Thompson of Menomonee Falls, WI; Amber Thompson of Madison, WI; Lindsey Vorachek (Joshua Evans) of Anchorage, AK; Kasey (Kurtis) Mitchell of Pacific, WA; Kelly (Ian) McCoy of Everett, WA; David Lewis of St. Louis, MO, and Cody Lewis of Marionville, MO; and great grandchildren Nolan, Elliot and Allie Thompson; Kendall and Camryn Evans; and Aria McCoy. Donations may be made in Henry's memory to Children's Camps International. Henry Berg 1939 ~ 2021 Henry H Berg was born in Nikolaifeld Russia on August 26, 1939 to Henry and Agatha Berg. Henry’s family was very unsettled as they often moved to avoid being in the middle of war. After several years and many moves, they were able to immigrate to Canada in 1948 with Rosemary Alberta being their final destination. The family was able to start a farm in the Gem area. Henry gave his life to the Lord at a young age. Henry valued education as he completed his grade school and attended bible school. Shortly after this he met the love of his life Katie Regier in 1962 and proposed marriage after 10 months and they were married July 13th, 1963. Two days after their 1st year wedding anniversary their first son, Anthony David was born July 15th, 1964. Henry continued with his education during this time to complete his Alberta Teaching Certificate in December of 1965. Shortly after this their second son, Chad Henry was born December 27th, 1965. Henry began his teaching career in various small communities in Alberta settling in Vauxhall. Their third son, Samuel Glen was born June 14th, 1969. In 1976 the family moved to Winkler, where Henry taught industrial arts courses at Garden Valley Collegiate. Henry with family joined the Winkler MB Church where he served in various roles as he felt called. He retired after 1990 and took on various other jobs including Winkler Bible Institute, Kroeker Farms, and most recently, his volunteer work at the Winkler MCC Store. For the last number of years Henry struggled with a heart condition among other organ issues. On Friday December 10th he was admitted to Boundary Trails Health Centre after having unidentified internal bleeding. In the early hours of Wednesday December 22nd his Christmas wish was granted and the Lord took him home to be with Him. Henry was predeceased by his brother, Willie, son, Anthony, brother, John, father, John, mother, Agatha and wife, Katie. Henry is survived by son, Chad and wife, Agatha, Allison and Randy Wiebe, Kristie and Henry Guenther, Jasmine, son, Sam and wife, Trish, Janessa and Alexander Peters, Dana, and Robyn. Henry was also blessed to meet his great granddaughter, Paisley Wiebe. Henry will always be remembered by his selfless generosity to others and by his response when asked how he was doing, “Thankful & Blessed” no matter what his situation that day. Jacob Allen Weiker was born on July 24, 1959 in Cando ND. At a young age the family moved to the Tokio, North Dakota area where Jacob lived and was educated. He loved the farm life, country life and worked as ranch hand in the area. He worked for Terry and Duane Smith for many years and most recently for Clinton Hammond family. Jacob married his beloved Hilda Mary Demarce in January of 1990 in Devils Lake. They lived and raised their family through the years in the Tokio area. Jacob and Hilda opened their home and their hearts to many foster children and with loving hearts were adoptive parents also. Jacob’s Hilda, the love of his life died on November 7, 2019. Jacob loved his family with all his heart. He was that special friend and neighbor always willing to help, to lend a hand whenever and wherever needed. Jacob loved the outdoors, fishing and working on cars. He was so happy when he could pass on his mechanic skills to his son. Jacob’s loving family include his children Anthony Weiker and his wife Kollin, Samantha Littleghost and Mary Weiker; grandchildren Meyleah, Malakye, Kodda, Nadine, Ella and Tatum and many dear friends. His spiritual journey will lead him home to Heaven and to his wife Hilda. Pallbearers will be Anthony Weiker, Jerrod Hathaway, Clinton Hammond, Dion Jackson, Troyal Thumb and Junior Rue. A graveside service will be held at St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery in the spring of 2022 as he is laid to peaceful rest beside Hilda. |
